LETTER: When Costumes Go Comically Awry!

Carnival costumes that say less is more

I hope this letter finds you well and not caught in a wardrobe malfunction of epic proportions! Speaking of which, I felt compelled to address a rather “ahem” majestic display I witnessed in St. John’s during the carnival Monday.

Now, I believe everyone deserves to dance and celebrate, but sometimes it seems that certain outfits might be auditioning for a comedy show rather than a festival!

Picture this: a beautiful woman, proudly rocking the “more cushion’” vibe, decides that what the world needs is a little more… well, exposure.

I couldn’t help but wonder if these costumes had minds of their own, making a break for freedom while she was trying to enjoy the festivities!

Let’s be honest, folks. When your belly is doing its own little jig while your bra cups look like they’re ready to throw in the towel, maybe it’s time to reconsider the whole “less is more” motto! And can we talk about those panty strings? I’m pretty sure they’ve gone rogue and were planning to start a tug-of-war with their own dignity.

To our curvy queens: we love you; we really do! But if you’re weighing in at 250 pounds (or an impressive amount more), it might be worth asking yourself if a slingshot bikini is really your best friend.

Let’s leave the high-flying, string-slinging attire for the circus performers and opt for something that doesn’t require an emergency hotline to retrieve!

It’s carnival, people! Let’s have fun without turning the parade into a “Where’s the Flap?” episode. Here’s to celebrating in style—preferably with a little more coverage and a lot more laughs!

  1. I agree but during carnival everybody takes their free pass to be naked in the streets. It’s such a shame.

    • Pardon me! Is indecency on vacation during Carnival? Is morality no longer called by that name when it’s Carnival? SMH! No wonder our society is in the depraved state it is in! We turn the other way to ills, and when the society deteriorates we say something is wrong! DUH!!

  3. This is the unyielding spirit of Carnival. You lose a feather, you tie it back on. You lose a strap, you keep on dancing. The show must go on!

  5. I absolutely agree with the writer. As a big girl, some made me feel so ashamed. We have to do better.

  6. Every year, bystanders look on, offering commentary and criticism about others’ appearance, behavior, and attire. Some may view themselves as morally superior to the revellers, but I am reminded of the historical roots of Carnival and its significance. Carnival is a symbol of liberation. It represents freedom from oppression and bondage, especially during the time of slavery.

When the self righteous and overly pious pass judgment, they unknowingly mirror the attitudes of the colonial elite who condemned African culture during slavery. You may not realize it, but your unsolicited opinions often reflect personal insecurity and discomfort with self-expression. Rather than embracing individuality, you cling to societal expectations out of fear of being judged yourself.

Live and let live. If Carnival is not for you, simply stay home. Do not watch just to criticize those who are embracing joy and celebrating life. This journey is short, and everyone deserves the chance to pursue happiness in their own way.

  8. I can’t help but to weigh in on this. I’ve seen many of these Facebook pictures and it’s a shame to see how these females choose to jam around town comfortable in panty and bra and call that t-shirt mas. More like bathing suit mas. I see you females have no pride in yourself. Hate the carnival season
