The Government of Jersey has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of 16-year-old Antiguan cricketer Vonde Bowers, who was fatally stabbed in Gray’s Farm on Tuesday evening, July 29.
In a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, Sports, and Creative Industries, Daryll Matthew, Jersey’s Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, Deputy Kirsten Morel, extended condolences on behalf of his government and officials within Jersey’s cricket and economic development circles.
“It is with profound sorrow that I write to extend my heartfelt condolences,” the letter reads. “Vonde’s exceptional ability had earmarked him for a longer stay in Jersey, where he was set to further develop his abilities. It is a profound sadness that this opportunity will now never come to fruition.”
Bowers had recently returned from a tour of the United Kingdom and Jersey with the Antigua and Barbuda Under-19 team, where he had drawn attention for his skill and potential. Plans were reportedly in place for him to remain in Jersey for an extended period to further his training.
In tribute to the young athlete, the Jersey Under-19 cricket team wore black armbands during their opening match of the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier (European Division 1) on Wednesday.
Bowers’ death has sent shockwaves through both the local cricket community and wider public in Antigua and Barbuda, with tributes pouring in from teammates, coaches, and government officials.
Police investigations into the fatal shooting remain ongoing.
Daryll Matthew’s Response:

We have made international news for all the wrong reasons.
If you’ve read the news you would’ve seen the good reasons but Antiguans only see the bad in everything. Blind to the good
I am agreeing with you juju. And when we make international news for good reasons it’s short-lived. No way this boy should have died this way
Heartbreaking. Sixteen years old with so much talent and life ahead of him. We’ve lost more than just a cricketer, we’ve lost a future leader.
My condolences to the family and friends.
