Tropical Storm Watch in Effect for Barbuda as Erin Approaches

The Meteorological Service of Antigua and Barbuda has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Anguilla and Barbuda as strengthening Tropical Storm Erin approaches the region.

Additional tropical storm watches have been posted by:

France for St. Martin and St. Barthelemy

The Netherlands for Saba and St. Eustatius

St. Maarten for Sint Maarten

A Tropical Storm Watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.

As of 5:00 PM AST Erin was centered near latitude 16.7°N, longitude 51.2°W, moving west at 17 mph (28 km/h).

A turn toward the west-northwest is expected tonight, with the storm projected to pass near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend.

Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Forecasters expect Erin to strengthen into a hurricane by Friday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center, and the storm’s minimum central pressure is estimated at 998 mb (29.47 inches).
