The V.C. Bird International Airport has officially begun a major runway expansion project, marking a significant upgrade to Antigua and Barbuda’s primary gateway.
The $55-million USD initiative will unfold over eight phases, including the construction of a new turning bay and resurfacing of the existing runway. Officials say the upgrades are designed to bring the facility further in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, enhancing both safety and operational efficiency.

The project is being managed by Aecon Company Ltd in partnership with Kelly Construction Inc., with much of the construction using locally sourced aggregate, highlighting the government’s push to support domestic materials and labour.
Civil Aviation Minister, Hon. Charles Fernandez, joined Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority (ABAA) officials to mark the start of the works, emphasizing the project’s long-term benefits for tourism and commercial aviation.

The runway expansion is expected to be completed by November 2026, positioning V.C. Bird International Airport to accommodate growing air traffic and maintain compliance with international aviation regulations.

Finally, some major improvements at V.C. Bird! The new runway and turning bay should make arrivals and departures much smoother.
Hoping the construction goes on schedule. By 2026, this could really help Antigua handle more flights and tourists.
While I am happy about the expansion which is surely an enhancement to the airport itself, I know eventually is the flying public that will end up footing the bill
About time!!! The runway is way too bumpy currently.
Longer runways could attract international carriers and increase connectivity.
