Antigua and Barbuda has strengthened its commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship with the participation of national delegates in two prestigious training programmes currently underway in the People’s Republic of China.

Representing the twin-island nation at the 2025 China (Yantai) Island Nations Vocational Training Program on Tourism Management are Ms. Raynel Carroll, Executive Director of the Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute (ABHTI), and Mr. Shawn Benjamin, Community Relations Officer within the Ministry of Tourism.

Hosted at Yantai Vocational College, the program provides advanced instruction in global tourism strategies, destination marketing, sustainability frameworks, and community-based development—areas considered vital to the continued growth of Antigua and Barbuda’s hospitality sector.

At the same time, four other delegates — Ms. Faye Shantia Weatherill, Ms. Camesha Joseph, Ms. Kerissa James, and Ms. Shakila Francis — are attending the Seminar on Green Economy and Environmental Protection for Developing Countries in Beijing.

Organized by China’s Ministry of Commerce and the National Academy of Forestry and Grassland Administration, the seminar emphasizes eco-friendly practices, conservation strategies, and sustainable development models that are particularly relevant for small island developing states.

Tourism Minister, the Charles Fernandez, praised the participants, highlighting the government’s focus on investing in human resource development and equipping professionals with the skills to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.

“The professional development of our people remains central to the future of tourism and national growth,” Minister Fernandez said. “By engaging in these global programmes, our delegates are strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s ability to balance world-class tourism development with the highest standards of environmental care. This also reflects the strong and growing partnership between Antigua and Barbuda and the People’s Republic of China.”

Officials note that the expertise gained from these training opportunities will enhance the country’s resilience, drive sustainable innovation, and maintain Antigua and Barbuda’s competitive edge as a premier tourism destination in the Caribbean.
