School of Agriculture at the former Glanvilles Primary Schools

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and the Director of the newly established Antigua and Barbuda College of Advanced Studies (ABCAS) appeared before Cabinet this week to provide updates on ongoing teacher negotiations and the preparedness of schools and tertiary institutions for the start of the new academic year on Monday, 8th September.

Officials reported that discussions with the Teachers Union are progressing smoothly, with educators actively preparing for the reopening of schools. The Director of ABCAS confirmed that all tertiary institutions under its oversight are ready to welcome students.

Cabinet also received an update on the School of Agriculture, housed at the former Glanvilles Primary School. The school will soon offer short courses for farm attendants and farmers, covering areas such as animal husbandry and agro-processing.

Looking ahead, the institution plans to launch Associate Degree programmes in September 2026, expanding opportunities for advanced studies in agriculture and related fields.

To support this growth, Cabinet approved the creation of several key positions for the new campus, including:
• Campus Principal
• Lecturers
• Farm Supervisors
• Heads of Department in Crop Production, Livestock Production, and Agro-Processing

This initiative underscores the Government’s continued commitment to strengthening education at all levels, ensuring that both students and teachers are well-supported in the delivery of high-quality academic and vocational training.

  2. Finally, agriculture is being taken seriously. Those short courses could really help small farmers modernize their practices.

  3. It’s one thing to approve new positions, do we actually have enough qualified lecturers in agriculture?

  4. This should not have happened. It’s saddening to see my old school is but a used to towel to the ministry after we accomplishes so much and on our way to greater things. With the guidance of Rory Christopher and teachers and staff of my former school we have and will continue to do just what our moto says :”Attaining success through dedication and perseverance” with or without the ministries support.
