Italian fashion legend Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, the Armani Group announced on Thursday. The company described him as “a tireless driving force” and confirmed he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
Armani maintained a personal connection to Antigua and Barbuda, owning multiple properties on the islands managed over the years by Jeff Hadeed. He frequently visited, fostering close ties with the local community and becoming a well-known figure in the country.
Born in Piacenza, Italy, in 1934, Armani initially pursued medicine before turning to fashion. He began his career in 1957 as a window dresser at Milan’s La Rinascente department store and later worked under designer Nino Cerruti, where he perfected the unstructured jacket, a signature of his style. In 1975, he co-founded his eponymous label with life and business partner Sergio Galeotti, introducing a pioneering androgynous look that reshaped menswear and womenswear.
Hollywood stars quickly embraced his creations. Richard Gere’s Armani suit in American Gigolo (1980) became iconic, while celebrities including Sophia Loren, Sean Connery, and Tina Turner helped cement the brand’s global status. Armani expanded his empire with Emporio Armani, Armani Jeans, Armani Exchange, Armani/Casa, and luxury hotels worldwide, while also designing Italy’s Olympic team uniforms and owning top basketball team Olimpia Milano.
His accolades include the Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and service as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. Armani’s influence endures, from vintage collectors seeking classic tailoring to stars like Cate Blanchett wearing his designs on the global stage.
Giorgio Armani leaves behind a legacy of timeless elegance, meticulous craftsmanship, and a vision that shaped global fashion, while also leaving a lasting impression on Antigua and Barbuda.
