Antigua and Barbuda to Lead Regional Transport Body for the First Time

Ambassador Dr. Clarence Pilgrim

Antigua and Barbuda has secured a new leadership role on the regional stage, after being elected to chair the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) Special Committee on Transport. It’s the first time the country has held the post, and officials say the appointment reflects growing confidence in its ability to shape policy across the Caribbean.

The unanimous decision came during the Committee’s 34th meeting, where member states agreed Antigua and Barbuda should take the lead in steering discussions on transport and logistics — issues that are critical to regional trade, tourism, and economic resilience.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Barbuda Affairs, Dr. Clarence E. Pilgrim, will serve as Chairman. With decades of public service and regional engagement under his belt, Dr. Pilgrim will guide the Committee’s work programme for 2025–2026. That agenda includes modernising transport systems, rolling out digital solutions for logistics, strengthening air and sea links, and encouraging more young people and women to enter the transport and shipping sectors.

In his first remarks as Chair, Dr. Pilgrim called the role both a privilege and a duty.

“This is not merely an honour for Antigua and Barbuda, but a responsibility we embrace on behalf of all Caribbean peoples. Strengthening connectivity, harnessing innovation, and building resilience in our transport systems are fundamental to our region’s competitiveness and prosperity,” he said.

The ACS Special Committee on Transport helps set the pace for regional development by aligning projects with global priorities such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in climate action, innovation, and sustainable infrastructure.

Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs say Antigua and Barbuda will use the Chairmanship to push for stronger collaboration with regional partners, international organisations, and private investors to deliver on its ambitious goals.

  4. @ Juju Bee, I think you are missing the point. It’s about Antigua and Barbuda not the individual. By the way, I don’t think he was the Director of Public Works. Wasn’t it the gentleman who was eventually publicly removed. You are mixing them up.

  7. Transport in Antigua itself still has major problems. Fix home first before leading regionally.

    • @ inormed citizen. You are obviously not an informed citizen. This is about regional transport not local transport. There is a difference. Please be informed before commenting. Furthermore let me say that I believe this to be a positive for Antigua and Barbuda’s standing in the Caribbean.
