Giorgio Armani
Former Political Leader Harold Lovell has paid tribute to the late fashion icon Giorgio Armani, recalling the designer’s special connection with Antigua and Barbuda. Armani, who passed away this week at the age of 91, was celebrated worldwide for his timeless elegance but also quietly found inspiration and retreat on the island.
Lovell noted that in November 2006, Architectural Digest featured Armani’s Antiguan retreat, described as a sanctuary of light, air, and understated elegance. At the time, Lovell was serving as Minister of Tourism and described the feature as a proud moment for the country.
“I was honored to meet Mr. Armani, to be invited into his home, and to hear firsthand why Antigua meant so much to him. He often said that the essence of Antigua, its natural beauty, calm spirit, and effortless charm, aligned perfectly with his own sense of elegance. That is why he chose our island as his retreat.” Lovell Recalled
Armani’s villas, named Flower and Serena, were more than vacation homes, Lovell said. They reflected the designer’s philosophy of simplicity, grace, and harmony with nature, qualities that resonate deeply with the island’s spirit.
Lovell emphasized that Armani’s legacy extended beyond the fashion world to the tranquil spaces he created for reflection and renewal. “His passing reminds us that true legacy is not only in the clothes he designed or the red carpets he defined, but also in the quiet spaces he created. I am proud that Antigua was part of that legacy.”
Quoting Armani’s famous words, Lovell added: “Elegance is not about being noticed, it’s about being remembered!”
