Port Authority pays tribute to late crane operator an technician Sylvester “Socket” Henry

The Antigua Port Authority has paid tribute to the late Sylvester “Socket” Henry, a well-respected crane operator and technician, by dedicating its newly arrived crane in his memory.

Mr. Henry passed away on Friday, 26th August 2022. He has served Antigua & Barbuda Port Authority for 35 years as the Crane Operator. Socket was a reliable, hard-working, and dedicated employee throughout his years at the Port Authority. Sylvester “Socket” Henry will be missed by all his colleagues.

During a press conference, Port Manager Darwin Telemaque announced that the crane will bear Henry’s name, honoring his years of service and commitment to the Port. The gesture has been warmly welcomed by Henry’s family and colleagues across the region.

Henry’s nephew, Gavin Emmanuel, expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the family. “If Socket were alive, he would have been very pleased with this gesture. It means so much to us because it shows that his contribution to the Port is remembered and valued. We are deeply grateful,” Emmanuel said.

Tributes also came from outside Antigua. Curtis Augustin of the St. Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) described the dedication as an example for other ports to follow.

“This is such a remarkable gesture, and I am elated to see it. Socket spent some months in St. Lucia training on the LHM 320 crane as both a technician and operator. During that time, I witnessed his dedication to his profession, and we also had the opportunity to interact socially during the Caribbean Whitsuntide Port Games,” Augustin recalled.

He added, “I believe this example should be emulated by other sister ports to recognize exemplary service by dedicated staff. Again, thank you so very much for this kind and fitting tribute to his legacy.”

The dedication of the crane ensures that Sylvester “Socket” Henry’s contributions to the development of the Antigua Port Authority will be remembered for years to come.

  6. I don’t know this man from Adam but I want to make a clarion call going forward to all employers: Government, Statutory or Private. Do not wait until someone can no longer smell the roses to give them their roses. 35 years in the same profession is by no means an easy feat. Basically it’s all your life. It’s sad that Socket is not here to see his name on the crane and experience the joy and happiness of a crane named in your honour, fortunately his family gets to see it.
