Jury Convicts Middle-Aged Man of Raping Minor

A jury has found a man in his late forties guilty of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl following extensive deliberations yesterday.

The conviction concluded a trial that commenced in July under Justice Ann Marie Smith’s jurisdiction, addressing charges of sexual assault against a minor that allegedly took place in December 2021.

The defendant, who was 45 at the time of the offenses, was the romantic partner of a family friend where the victim had been staying for a weekend visit.

Court proceedings revealed that the child had limited previous contact with the man, with their interactions typically consisting of basic pleasantries and casual conversation.

The prosecution’s case centered on testimony describing how the defendant entered the girl’s bedroom while she slept, initially making physical contact that awakened her. Following a brief exchange, he departed but later returned to continue inappropriate touching that made the child uncomfortable and frightened.

The assault escalated when the victim went to bathe in a bathroom accessible through multiple entrances. The defendant entered during her shower, physically removed her from the running water, and proceeded to sexually assault her despite her resistance and distress.

After careful consideration of all evidence presented throughout the trial, the jury delivered a guilty verdict.

The defendant’s request to remain free on bail while awaiting sentencing was denied by the court. Justice Ann Marie Smith is scheduled to impose sentence on October 24, when the full penalty for these crimes against the child victim will be determined.

    • I take serious offense to the use of the word men here. We the legion of men. Wish to be disassociated with. And do not classify these creatures as one of us.
These creatures are giving good a bad rep.

We would appreciate if. The news reports replace the word man and men with the word creature for articles as these.

  8. Does the child have no male relatives to take care of that bastard? And why such a long jury deliberation? Is it because there there were undercover pedos on said jury too and they were scared they’ll be dealt with too? This hard tone man needs to be dealt with severely.

  11. While the legal system has delivered justice in this case, the broader societal issue remains. How can schools, families, and community organizations better safeguard children? This conviction should serve as a wake-up call to strengthen child protection measures across Antigua and Barbuda.

  12. This is a good result. Now, we have to go after any adult involved with an underage child as its statutory rape! We have a habit of labelling the children as ‘ hot and out of order ‘ when the blame is solely on the adult and not the child.

Children’s prefrontal cortexes are not properly developed until 25 so they don’t understand the consequences of their actions at that age, and may respond to affection and attention they are not getting at home.
