Farmers across Antigua and Barbuda are set to benefit from a boost in mobility and efficiency following a donation of twelve motorized farm vehicles from the People’s Government of Hainan Province, China.
The official handover took place on September 27, 2025, during a ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy. The Chinese delegation was led by Vice Governor Zou Guang and included senior representatives from Hainan’s government and agricultural sector, along with the Chinese Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the government, Agriculture Minister Hon. Anthony Smith Jr. expressed gratitude, noting that the vehicles will help farmers—particularly those in rural areas improve access and productivity. He added that the gesture demonstrates the growing bond between Antigua and Barbuda and China.
The event also sparked meaningful discussions about strengthening agriculture. Officials highlighted the need for greater water conservation and support for key local crops such as sweet potatoes and the Antigua Black Pineapple.
Plans for a new Water-Saving Irrigation Program, scheduled for mid-October, were also unveiled as part of efforts to introduce more efficient irrigation techniques.
The ceremony closed with the symbolic exchange of certificates and a framed portrait of the vehicles marking both the gift and a new chapter in cooperation between the two nations.

Looking forward to seeing how this collaboration helps local farmers especially with new technologies and crop management practices.
