The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus has cleared another important hurdle, securing continuing registration status from the Antigua and Barbuda National Accreditation Board (ABNAB).
The decision, confirmed this month, means the campus is officially registered to operate until 2027, following a detailed re-registration process that examined whether it met the country’s minimum standards for post-secondary institutions.
Principal of the campus, Professor C. Justin Robinson, welcomed the news, saying it affirms UWI’s long-standing reputation for quality. “As the campus continues to grow, we intend to maintain and build on the standards of the wider UWI system,” he said. He also pointed out that Five Islands is uniquely positioned as a modern institution “established in the digital age for the digital natives” while holding fast to the university’s traditional benchmarks of excellence.
Campus Registrar, Dr. Camille Samuel, who played a key role in steering the process, described the re-registration as especially meaningful since it came at a time when the institution had fully returned to face-to-face operations after the COVID-19 pandemic. “The campus worked hard in a post-pandemic environment to ensure that the highest standards were met for students and staff,” she said.
ABNAB, in its statement, praised the achievement as a “significant step forward” in strengthening quality in higher education across Antigua and Barbuda.
Since opening its doors in 2019, the Five Islands Campus has become the fifth arm of the UWI system, serving Antigua and Barbuda as well as students across the OECS region.
