Opposition delegation has meeting Attorney General about gun crimes

Leader of the Opposition, MP Jamale Pringle, has confirmed that the United Progressive Party (UPP) has engaged the government in discussions over the growing number of gun-related crimes in Antigua and Barbuda.

Pringle wrote to Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin requesting a meeting that included the Acting Commissioner of Police, the Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and a UPP delegation.

The session, which took place yesterday, focused on both the government’s strategies to curb violent crime and the opposition’s own recommendations.

“We had a cordial discussion,” Pringle said, noting that the talks centered around both the challenges facing law enforcement and potential solutions. “We asked questions that we believe are pertinent to the safety of the country and its people. We believe as a political organization, it is important for us to not only criticize but also offer recommendations.”

Pringle emphasized that crime is a national issue that transcends politics. “Politics aside, crime affects the entire nation, and the UPP, just like the ABLP, is very concerned,” he stated.

According to Pringle, the Attorney General outlined several government initiatives currently underway to address the spike in gun violence.

The Opposition leader described the meeting as “productive” and confirmed that both sides agreed to continue the dialogue.

The UPP delegation included former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, who now serves as a political advisor, and attorney Chaku Symister.

Pringle underscored that his party stands ready to play its part in helping to combat crime and restore public confidence in security.

Pringle spoke to George Whener following the meeting.
