The government’s National Month of No Litter campaign is evolving into a year-round initiative, as growing numbers of residents, including entertainers, athletes, educators, and students, pledge their support to keeping Antigua and Barbuda clean.
Maurice Merchant, Director of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, revealed that the response from the public has been “remarkable,” prompting officials to consider extending the clean-up movement beyond October.
“The list is remarkable. From the who’s who in sports, entertainment, and education, to young persons who excelled in CAPE and CXC. All have indicated they are prepared to lend their voices and status to sensitize the public about cleanup efforts,” Merchant said.
The initiative forms part of the government’s National Cleanup Campaign, launched earlier this month under the theme “Love Where You Live”.
The campaign is spearheaded by the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) in collaboration with several government agencies, including the National Solid Waste Management Authority, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Works.
Merchant said the government is encouraged by the outpouring of civic pride and volunteerism, particularly from young people and well-known figures who are using their influence to inspire change. He described this as a positive shift in national consciousness toward environmental responsibility.
“It’s heartening to see that this is no longer just a government campaign, it’s becoming a people’s movement,” Merchant added.
