Church leader urges public to avoid using ATMs at night

Head of the Christian Ministries Center, Bishop Charlesworth Browne, is thanking God for sparing his life after what he describes as “sobering” encounter at an ATM in Village Walk on Sunday night.

The well-known clergyman told Antigua.news that the ordeal unfolded around 7:30 p.m., when he stopped to deposit, having what he called an “iffy feeling” about visiting the ATM after dark.

“When I came out of the car, I realized the parking lot was empty,” Bishop Browne recalled. “I was making a deposit and as soon as I was through, the door was busted open in a very aggressive way and a young man charged in. I recognized the face — he didn’t say anything…”

Bishop Browne said that when he stepped outside, he was cornered by two vehicles, one of which was white.

“A young man jumped out of the vehicle. I inadvertently reached to my side for my phone, and with that action, he dashed the other way he thought I was reaching for a weapon,” he recounted.

Shaken but unharmed, Bishop Browne described the experience as a sobering reminder of the dangers of nighttime ATM use, especially given the rising reports of robberies and attempted attacks.

“People need to stop going to the ATM at nights. I had my experience last night,” he warned. “Yes, it’s there for convenience, but don’t go to the ATM. I thank God, it could have been worse. No one is immune to what’s happening in our society. We need to be vigilant and watchful.”

Meanwhile, Bishop Browne’s narrow escape has reignited public calls for better security at ATMs and stronger community vigilance, particularly in isolated areas after dark.
