
ABEC Mourns the Passing of Former Commissioner Winston Gomes
The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is mourning the loss of Mr. Winston Gomes, a former Commissioner remembered for his integrity, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to fair and transparent elections.
Mr. Gomes, who served on the Commission from 2002 to 2009, was among the first five members appointed during a crucial phase in the country’s electoral development. His tenure was marked by steady leadership and a deep respect for the principles of democracy.
In a statement, ABEC described Mr. Gomes as a man of “sound judgment and public spirit,” noting that his service helped to strengthen the Commission’s reputation for credibility and impartiality.
“Mr. Gomes played a vital role in shaping the foundation of our modern electoral system,” the release noted. “His professionalism and dedication earned him the admiration of colleagues, stakeholders, and the wider public.”
Chairman, Ambassador Arthur G.B. Thomas, extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Commission, the Supervisor of Elections, and all members of staff to Mr. Gomes’ family and loved ones.
ABEC said Mr. Gomes’ legacy will continue to inspire the Commission’s ongoing mission to safeguard free and fair elections in Antigua and Barbuda.
