Just days after a vicious pit bull attack left her hospitalized with multiple bite wounds, 27-year-old Shabo Nedwell attended her graduation ceremony at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus, completing her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting in a wheelchair and wearing a mask.

In an emotional Instagram post following the ceremony, Nedwell expressed overwhelming gratitude despite her ordeal. “I feel overwhelmed with gratitude, pride, and joy. This journey has not been easy, but it has been worth every challenge and every sacrifice,” she wrote.

The Cashew Hill resident sustained deep puncture wounds to both legs and a torn lip after being attacked by two pit bulls at her aunt’s home in Skerritt’s Pasture on Friday afternoon. She remains hospitalized in stable condition, with medical staff describing her injuries as serious but not life-threatening.

Despite her physical condition, Nedwell’s determination to participate in her graduation remained unwavering. “I want to give a special thank you to the incredible staff at the University of the West Indies, Five Islands Campus, for making it possible for me to be part of this ceremony despite my current recovery,” she stated.

Nedwell’s academic journey was marked by extraordinary dedication. She began her studies at UWI in 2022 on a four-year program but accelerated her coursework to complete the degree in just three years while maintaining a GPA above 3.0. “I received my letter of completion on September 1st, 2025. I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday gift. What should have taken four years, I completed in three,” she shared.

Reflecting on the recent attack, Nedwell wrote: “Recently, I faced an unexpected incident, but through their compassion and dedication, I was still able to experience this milestone. Today reminds me that perseverance, faith, and the kindness of others can help us rise above anything.”

The graduate credited her single father for his unwavering support throughout her academic journey. “I was raised by a single father who worked tirelessly to provide for me and believed in me even when I doubted myself,” she wrote, dedicating her achievement to him.

Nedwell’s message of resilience resonated throughout her post: “If resilience had a face, it would be mine. My journey is living proof that failure does not define you, what defines you is how many times you choose to get back up.”

The incident occurred when Nedwell arrived  at her aunt Stacy Simon’s home and entered through the back door. Simon told authorities she heard “terrifying screams” and rushed to restrain the two pit bulls.

Police continue to investigate the attack, with no word yet on whether the animals will be seized or if charges will be filed. The incident has reignited public debate about the control of aggressive dog breeds and owner responsibility.
