The Fisheries Division Conference Room at Point Wharf came alive this morning as regional stakeholders gathered for the inaugural Virtual Symposium on Next Generation Sweet Potato Production in the Caribbean.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Government and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs, Mr. Gregory Bailey, Director of Agriculture and Chair of the Project Steering Committee, underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in strengthening food security across the region.
Bailey hailed the sweet potato as more than a staple crop, describing it as “a symbol of resilience, heritage, and sustenance for Caribbean people.” He noted that its versatility makes it a cornerstone for agricultural diversification, value chain development, and the transformation of regional food systems.
He said the symposium marks both a milestone and a catalyst—an opportunity to consolidate lessons learned and to chart a course for continued innovation and partnership. Bailey also called for the creation of a Caribbean Sweet Potato Community of Practice, a regional network aimed at encouraging ongoing knowledge sharing and collaboration among farmers, researchers, and agricultural institutions.
Expressing gratitude to the many local, regional, and international partners involved, Bailey reaffirmed Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to advancing sustainable and resilient agriculture throughout the Caribbean.
