A dynamic new community initiative aimed at protecting young minds from the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse was launched this week at the Bendals Primary School. The programme, spearheaded by Dr. Terri London and the Level Up Team, forms part of a wider Substance Abuse Prevention Campaign across the St. Mary’s North Constituency.
The launch featured an engaging and educational session led by Dr. Doran, a psychologist with years of professional experience, who delivered a powerful, hands-on presentation about how the brain works and how harmful substances can affect its normal functions. Using a live demonstration, he explained how the brain is protected by layers of tissue and fluid, and how drugs, alcohol, and nicotine can disrupt its delicate balance, leading to poor decision-making, memory loss, and even long-term mental health problems.
The students listened intently and participated enthusiastically, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their own insights. The session encouraged them to make smart, safe, and positive choices, to love their bodies, choose friends who uplift them, and focus on their goals.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Terri London, founder of the Level Up Team, emphasized that early education is the most effective form of prevention.
“When children understand how their brains and bodies work, they’re better equipped to make informed, confident decisions,” she said. “Empowerment through knowledge is the key to protecting our youth and building a healthier, stronger community.”
The Substance Abuse Initiative is part of the Level Up Team’s ongoing efforts to promote youth development, mental health awareness, and community engagement throughout St. Mary’s North. Plans are already underway to extend the programme to other schools and neighbourhoods in the coming weeks.
At the close of the event, Ariel April, President of the Bendals Primary Student Council, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks on behalf of the students, expressing appreciation for the interactive and inspiring session.
With its guiding message — “It’s nice to be nice” — the Level Up Team continues to remind young people that their future depends on the choices they make today.

“By their works you shall know them”
This is a Bible text that epitomises Terri.
She is ready to work and she is working.
Woman move in silence sometimes. People might be more inclined to vote for you then
So proud to see positive action in Bendals. These kinds of programs make a real difference in shaping young minds.
Excellent move by the Level Up Team too many young people getting caught up with drugs and alcohol. Starting at primary level is the best approach. Education is power.
