The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has approved the installation of a new drainage system at the recently opened Tranquility Park Cemetery, following severe flooding caused by recent heavy rainfall.
The decision came after the Minister for Health Sir Molwyn Joseph briefed Cabinet on the impact of more than nine inches of rain that fell within a 24-hour period, which resulted in significant waterlogging at the cemetery site.
Sir Molwyn explained that the unusually intense rainfall had also affected the St. John’s and Valley Church Cemeteries, underscoring the need for improved drainage infrastructure at burial sites.
In response to the request, Prime Minister Gaston Browne and members of the Cabinet approved the installation of an effective drainage system at Tranquility Park and instructed the Ministry of Health to commence the works without delay.
The new system is expected to enhance flood resilience at the cemetery and ensure the continued integrity and accessibility of the site during periods of heavy rain.

So they didn’t know to construct the drainage during the construction of the cemetery? It is just like DCA telling us to build a cistern on our home when building. It is like this country is going backwards and backwards by 4 steps instead of 2 steps. Everyone knows that entire area in Tomlinson is an area prone for flooding. So, you’re telling me that no one in DCA (who approved the design plan) and Public Works (who oversees the construction work) knows??
Peace of mind for visitors and families is priceless. Thankful this is finally happening.
I didn’t realize something like that required cabinet approval. .thought that’s standard and should have been part of the original plan
Good move, but I hope they use proper materials and not just quick fixes. Flooding at Tranquility Park is more than an eyesore it’s disrespectful to the graves.
