Listen: Government begins return of illegally purchased vehicles as investigation deepens

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant

Several high-end vehicles that were illegally purchased in the name of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda have been returned to local dealerships as part of an ongoing investigation into procurement breaches.

According to the Director of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office, Maurice Merchant, the process of returning the vehicles is already underway, with more expected to follow in the coming days as investigators complete their review.

Merchant confirmed that a large number of the vehicles obtained without proper authorization have been sent back to the respective dealers, describing the move as part of the administration’s broader commitment to transparency and accountability.

He explained that government departments are cooperating fully with the audit, which aims to trace how the vehicles were acquired, who approved the transactions, and whether proper Cabinet or Ministry of Finance clearance was granted.
