A new era of emergency medicine for Antigua and Barbuda

The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) has been officially certified as an Essential Stroke Centre by the World Stroke Organization (WSO), marking a historic milestone for Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare system.

The certification — the first of its kind for the country — confirms that SLBMC meets rigorous international standards for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke, one of the world’s leading causes of death and long-term disability.

“This is a defining moment not just for our hospital, but for our nation,” said Dr. Gaden Osborne, Neurologist and Chair of Subspecialty Services at SLBMC, who spearheaded the certification process. “We’ve spent years building a system that allows patients to receive timely, evidence-based stroke care right here at home. This recognition validates that effort.”

The hospital’s stroke team underwent a detailed review of its clinical protocols, emergency response, and multidisciplinary coordination. During the assessment, evaluators witnessed a real-life emergency when a patient arrived with stroke symptoms.

The team’s swift and coordinated response impressed the WSO representatives and demonstrated the hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality care under pressure.

Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, SLBMC’s Medical Director, described the certification as “a proud and powerful achievement that shows what’s possible when commitment and collaboration meet compassion.”

“Stroke care is one of the most time-sensitive areas in medicine,” she said. “This certification shows that our team is capable, prepared, and ready to save lives using international best practices.”

Salma Crump, Head of Marketing and Communications at SLBMC, called the accomplishment “a win for the entire community.”

“Every family touched by stroke can now have greater confidence that their hospital has the systems, people, and passion to deliver the best care possible,” she said. “It’s about trust, progress, and pride for our nation.”

The WSO’s recognition underscores SLBMC’s growing reputation for clinical excellence and its ongoing mission to expand specialized medical services across Antigua and Barbuda.

Hospital officials say the achievement represents just one step in a broader effort to build a resilient, patient-centered healthcare system capable of meeting international standards.
