Bathroom Facility at YASCO Sports Complex Could Be Ready By 2026

Work is underway to finish long-stalled bathroom facilities at the YASCO Sports Complex, though progress remains slower than initially anticipated, according to Observer media.

The government announced plans in May to complete the structure, originally projecting a year-end finish. That timeline has now shifted to early 2026, with some uncertainty remaining about the exact completion date.

National coach and former athlete Teddy Daley told Observer media this week that workers indicated the facility could be ready by January. He explained the bathrooms and showers would significantly improve training capabilities, particularly during the annual December Christmas camp when athletes train twice daily and need facilities on-site.

Observer media’s visit to the track revealed rafters already installed to support roofing, with some plumbing work completed to accommodate water systems within the structure.

The unfinished building has stood incomplete for over 15 years. It was started under the previous United Progressive Party administration but remained unfinished for another decade under the current government, despite repeated pledges to complete it. By earlier this year, the structure had become overrun with bushes and shrubs.

During a May Cabinet briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel ‘Max’ Hurst cited resource constraints as the reason for delays.

While Daley acknowledged the pace could be faster, he expressed relief that daily progress is visible. He noted that five months of movement represents more advancement than the previous 10 years combined.

Workers at the site reportedly told Observer media that inconsistent work schedules stem partly from material shortages. National Housing is handling the construction.

Sports Minister Daryll Matthew estimated in May that completing the structure would cost at least EC$350,000.

  1. That should be fixed with haste. Let’s make our sports men and women comfortable in the place they train

  2. Finally! This should have been done years ago. Athletes and fans have suffered long enough without proper facilities.
