Lions Club of Antigua Marks 57 Years of Service with Health Screenings and Historic Recognition

The Lions Club of Antigua marked a remarkable milestone this past weekend, celebrating 57 years of service, compassion, and community impact with a day dedicated to health, partnership, and recognition.

On Saturday, October 18, the Club partnered with Breast Friends to host a Breast Cancer Awareness screening at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre. More than 110 women received free, comprehensive screenings a powerful reminder of the Club’s unwavering commitment to promoting early detection and women’s health.

Lions volunteers were instrumental in the success of the event, managing logistics and assisting participants throughout the day.

The celebration continued with a 57th Anniversary Luncheon at Chimney’s Restaurant, where members reflected on the Club’s legacy of service and community engagement. During the luncheon, Mr. Richard Hadeed, Managing Director of Bio Health Medical Laboratory, was presented with the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest honor bestowed by Lions Clubs International. The award recognizes outstanding humanitarian service and dedication to improving lives.

Mr. Hadeed’s recognition represents a historic first for Antigua and Barbuda, as Bio Health Medical becomes the nation’s first corporate partner to receive this global honour. Through his company’s longstanding support of the Annual Prostate Screening Programme, hundreds of men have gained access to affordable testing and early diagnosis services, significantly advancing men’s health initiatives across the island.

n her remarks, Lion President Ileathea Cabral reaffirmed the Club’s commitment to its mission of service and compassion.
“Service is at the heart of who we are,” she said. “Through partnership and compassion, we strive to create lasting impact and inspire hope in every life we touch.”

Mr. Hadeed expressed his deep appreciation for the honour, pledging continued collaboration with the Lions Club to expand community-based health programmes and empower Antiguans and Barbudans to prioritize preventive care.
