The Antigua Yacht Club (AYC) officially opened the 2025 Caribbean Dinghy Championship on Thursday evening, marking the start of three days of competitive sailing and regional camaraderie.

The opening ceremony took place at the AYC Multipurpose Centre and featured sailors, coaches, and officials from across the Caribbean. The event was chaired by AYC’s House and Grounds Director, John Gaillard, who welcomed participants and guests.

Commodore Dr. Clarence E. Pilgrim, Chairman of this year’s championship, emphasized that the event is not only about competition but also about building friendships and fostering growth in the sport. He extended a warm welcome to all participating nations and commended the young sailors who represent the future of Caribbean sailing. Dr. Pilgrim also thanked the event’s sponsors, the National Parks Authority and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority for their continued support.

Representing the Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA), Alison Sly-Adams praised the championship’s inclusive format, which encourages broader participation across the region. She highlighted the CSA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration among island nations through updated race schedules and the continued development of the championship.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Barbuda Affairs and Parliamentary Representative for St. Paul’s, the Hon. Paul “Chet” Greene, congratulated the organizers and urged competitors to demonstrate discipline, teamwork, and perseverance throughout the event.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic ringing of the Sailors’ Bell by Dr. Pilgrim, officially declaring the Caribbean Dinghy Championship 2025 open.

As host nation, Antigua and Barbuda enters the event as defending champions, having secured the Nation’s Cup in 2024 in Sint Maarten, its fifth consecutive title. Teams from St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Sint Maarten, and Antigua and Barbuda will compete over the weekend.

The championship will conclude on Sunday with a prize-giving ceremony at noon.
