Public Sector Workers to Receive Additional Retroactive Payment in December; Pay Increase Set for 2026

Public sector employees across Antigua and Barbuda will receive an additional retroactive salary payment in December 2025, following Cabinet’s ratification of the decision during its weekly meeting on Wednesday.

The announcement comes just days after Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Hon. Gaston Browne, revealed the government’s intention to make the supplementary payment as part of its ongoing commitment to improving compensation for public servants.

Director-General of Communication in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, confirmed the development during Friday’s post-Cabinet media briefing.

He said the Cabinet’s approval formalizes the Prime Minister’s earlier pledge and ensures that eligible public sector employees will benefit before the end of the year.

“Cabinet concretized that and ensured that all funds will be made available. In addition, salaries will also be paid very early in December to ensure people can do their shopping. Cabinet also discussed and agreed to a second salary in December”, he said.

In addition to the retroactive payment, public sector workers are set to receive a salary increase in 2026, marking another phase in the government’s broader plan to strengthen the public workforce and enhance overall morale within the civil service.

  3. When Cabinet gave it’s ministers their 14% increase they got their retroactive pay in full. Why do public sector workers have to get ours in piece meal? Don’t we know the value of money? Pay us all that is due to us and not another one month salary.
