As hundreds of residents turn out for the Annual Food Fair, the Central Board of Health (CBH) is reminding the public to stay alert about food safety and hygiene practices while enjoying the island’s favorite delicacies.
Through its Public Health Corner campaign, the CBH has issued a set of “Food Fair Safety Tips” under the theme “Did You Know?” — highlighting that even food that appears safe can cause illness if it has been left out too long.
“Eating food that has been sitting out too long can make you sick, even if it still looks safe,” the advisory warns. The CBH is encouraging fairgoers to buy from vendors who maintain clean stalls, proper food handling, and visible hygiene practices.
Simple Tips to Stay Safe
The CBH recommends that residents:
- Choose hot food and ensure it is served hot
- Eat meals within a reasonable time after purchasing — don’t let food sit out
- Wash hands thoroughly before eating
- Skip any food that looks questionable
- And most importantly, “When in doubt — throw it out!”
Protecting Public Health
Officials say these reminders are part of the Board’s ongoing effort to prevent foodborne illnesses, particularly during large community events.
“The goal is to keep everyone safe while supporting our hardworking vendors,” said a spokesperson from the Office of the Chief Health Inspector. “Clean practices and public awareness go hand in hand with good health.”
