The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has provided an update on efforts to stabilise electricity supply in Barbuda, following a series of intermittent power disruptions affecting the island in recent weeks.
According to the Authority, the outages stem from generation challenges at the main power plant, which are currently being addressed by APUA’s Electricity Business Unit. To maintain service at night, when solar generation is unavailable, a generator from the old power plant is being temporarily utilised to supplement production.
APUA confirmed that replacement parts for Generator #1 at the new Green Barbuda Solar Hybrid System (GBSHS) have already arrived on the island, with repair work scheduled to begin on November 17, 2025. The repairs are expected to take approximately two weeks to complete. Once operational, the generator will significantly boost power output and improve reliability for residents and businesses.
In addition, APUA announced that a new generator has been procured for the GBSHS facility to strengthen overall capacity and resilience. The unit is expected to arrive in Antigua within six weeks, before being transported to Barbuda for installation and commissioning.
“These upgrades will restore full generation capacity, enhance system stability, and ensure a more dependable power supply across the island,” the Authority stated.
APUA extended its apologies to Barbudans for the ongoing service interruptions and expressed gratitude for their patience and understanding during the restoration process.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a reliable, modern, and sustainable electricity service, assuring the public that efforts are progressing steadily to resolve the challenges and bring lasting improvements to Barbuda’s power infrastructure.
