Work is officially underway on the long-awaited Five Islands Primary School, marking another milestone in the government’s ongoing investment in education and community development.
The new institution, which will serve the growing Five Islands community and surrounding areas, is being built to provide modern, student-centered facilities designed to enhance learning and improve access to quality education.
The project forms part of the government’s wider plan to upgrade educational infrastructure across Antigua and Barbuda. The construction of the new primary school follows other major developments in the area, including the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus (UWI FIC), which has transformed the western corridor into a thriving educational hub.
Education Minister Daryll Matthew said the new school represents a tangible demonstration of the government’s commitment to equitable education.
The facility is expected to include spacious classrooms, a computer and science lab, library, playground, and assembly hall, with provisions for solar energy and climate-resilient construction. These features align with Antigua and Barbuda’s broader goals for sustainable development and energy efficiency in public infrastructure.
Residents of the Five Islands area have long called for a new primary school, noting the steady population growth driven by residential expansion and the nearby university.
