Antiguan and Barbudan communications consultant Andy Liburd is making waves at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, helping to ensure that the concerns of small island nations are heard on the global stage.

Liburd is a key member of the Media and Communications Team for the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), a coalition representing 39 nations most at risk from rising seas, extreme weather, and other climate impacts. His role is to amplify the voices of these vulnerable nations, ensuring their perspectives, challenges, and proposed solutions are clearly communicated during high-level negotiations.

At COP30, Liburd delivered a presentation to AOSIS negotiators highlighting the critical role of strategic communication in advancing the priorities of small island states. He focused on the urgent need to uphold the 1.5°C climate goal, secure climate finance, and protect oceans, forests, and biodiversity.

A familiar figure at annual climate summits, Liburd attributes his continued involvement to the support of the Antigua and Barbuda Mission to the United Nations, led by Ambassador Walton Webson, and AOSIS Communications Lead Bianca Beddoe, who recognized his dedication to the small island cause.

“It honestly makes me feel proud, despite the pressing challenges, that our country can continue to play a role in ensuring the urgent concerns of island nations remain at the forefront of climate action negotiations,” Mr. Liburd stated. “It is truly rewarding and satisfying that I can play a part in such a noble endeavour.”

Through his work with AOSIS, Liburd reinforces Antigua and Barbuda’s reputation as a leader in climate diplomacy, ensuring the voices of small island nations remain prominent and impossible for the international community to ignore.

COP30, now underway in Brazil, brings together nearly 200 countries to discuss urgent climate action, with small island states once again leading the charge for accountability, financial support, and long-term global solutions.
