The United Progressive Party (UPP) says police have denied its request to hold a Whistlestop event in St. John’s Rural East on Wednesday, November 12 without giving a reason.

According to the party, the event was planned to build support for an independent investigation into alleged corruption within the Ministry of Public Works, led by MP Maria Browne.

The UPP says it previously sought approval for an islandwide motorcade on November 9, but that was also denied due to police resource constraints tied to Remembrance Day activities.

The party has since applied to host the motorcade on Sunday, November 16, and says it is still awaiting written confirmation.

The UPP is calling on supporters to stand behind its campaign for transparency and a probe into what it describes as the “Bronco-gate” or “Vehicle-gate” scandal, reportedly valued at $15 million.
