Rotary Club of Antigua Donates Over $40,000 in Lifesaving Equipment to Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre
The Rotary Club of Antigua (RCA) has reinforced its longstanding commitment to improving national healthcare with a donation exceeding $40,000 XCD to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC).
The contribution, made during an official visit by Rotary District 7030 Governor Soraya Warner-Gustave, funded the purchase of Bubble CPAP machines and pulse oximeters for the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The new Bubble CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines will significantly expand the NICU’s capacity to treat premature and critically ill newborns.
The devices deliver non-invasive respiratory support that helps infants breathe more comfortably, reducing the need for mechanical ventilation and aligning local neonatal services with international care standards.
Several pulse oximeters were also acquired through the donation, giving healthcare teams additional tools to safely and efficiently monitor oxygen saturation levels in newborns. Hospital officials say the added equipment enables faster responses and enhances overall patient safety.
“This donation represents more than equipment, it’s an investment in the future of our children,” said Michael Spencer, Past President of the Rotary Club of Antigua, who initiated the project during his term. “We are proud to support Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and to play a part in ensuring that even the tiniest patients receive the best possible start in life.”
SLBMC Medical Director, Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, expressed profound gratitude, noting the immediate impact of the equipment on neonatal care.
“The Rotary Club’s support continues to transform what’s possible for our patients,” Dr. Belle-Jarvis said. “These Bubble CPAP machines and pulse oximeters have already made a tangible difference in the care we deliver. Countless babies — and the families who love them — are benefiting from this investment. We are truly grateful for Rotary’s continued partnership.”
Current RCA President, Elisa Graham, reaffirmed Rotary’s commitment to advancing community health.
“Supporting the hospital, and by extension the nation’s well-being, is something we take great pride in,” Graham said. “Our work is made possible only through the generosity of our members and supporters who believe in Rotary’s mission of service above self.”
In addition to the CPAP machines and pulse oximeters, the donation will support the acquisition of more specialized tools to further strengthen neonatal care at the country’s main public hospital.
