Monroe University Shines Spotlight on Antigua & Barbuda at Caribbean Independence Celebration

Monroe University’s Dining Lab burst into a vibrant display of culture, music, and national pride on October 31st as the campus community gathered to celebrate the independence days of Antigua & Barbuda, Sint Maarten, Dominica, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

The colourful event—hosted under Monroe’s International Initiative—brought together dozens of students, faculty, staff, and distinguished Caribbean representatives, creating a dynamic cultural showcase that highlighted the University’s deepening relationship with Caribbean students, particularly those from Antigua & Barbuda.

Launched in 2023 by President Marc Jerome, the International Initiative aims to strengthen Monroe’s commitment to fostering belonging and support for its global student population—now representing more than 135 countries among over 9,000 students. The Caribbean Independence celebration has quickly become a signature moment on the calendar, underscoring that commitment.

A special highlight of this year’s celebration was the strong representation of Antigua & Barbuda. The University welcomed Dr. Day, Antigua & Barbuda’s Diaspora Liaison, whose presence reinforced the twin-island nation’s active engagement with its students abroad.

Antiguan and Barbudan students contributed significantly to the night’s cultural performances—sharing music, spoken-word pieces, and culinary favourites that brought the familiar flavours of home to the New Rochelle campus. Traditional dishes such as ducana, saltfish, and coconut-infused treats added a powerful sensory connection for homesick students, many of whom had travelled thousands of miles to pursue their education.

The evening also featured performances from students representing all four nations, including original songs, dances, and cultural displays. The presence of regional dignitaries—including St. Vincent & the Grenadines Consular General Randy McIntosh and St. Maarten cultural ambassador Kenyo Baly—added prestige and reinforced the Caribbean community’s support for Monroe’s international students.
