The Executive Council’s Interinstitutional Working Group on Tourism and Climate Action is now operational following its inaugural meeting at the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly in Riyadh, where 29 countries from all regions took part. Antigua and Barbuda was elected Vice-Chair; Brazil will serve as Chair.
“The appointment reflects Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to climate leadership,” said Mr. St. Clair Soleyn, Director of Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Tourism and Investment, who will represent the country on the Working Group. “As a small island developing state on the frontlines of climate impacts, we must champion innovative, science-driven and people-centered climate solutions within tourism.”
The Working Group is designed to advance evidence‑based, coordinated approaches that strengthen climate adaptation, reduce emissions, and accelerate a transition to low‑carbon, climate‑resilient tourism. It will help implement the Glasgow Declaration and the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme, support the Global Partnership for Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism, and coordinate closely with the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability.
Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment, The Hon. Charles Fernandez, welcomed the appointment, saying it aligns with the country’s long-standing sustainability vision and reinforces its leadership in the region. “We’ll keep pushing for policies and partnerships that protect our environment and communities while securing a thriving tourism industry for generations to come.”
Formed in the wake of the Azerbaijan COP29 Declaration, the Working Group will strengthen partnerships, align strategies, and accelerate action across member states.
