The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) is celebrating one of its own following a major contribution to regional health advancement. Neurologist and Chair of Subspecialty Services, Dr. Gaden Osborne, recently served as moderator for a high-level session at the Caribbean Epilepsy Conference in Trinidad & Tobago—an event that brought together leading minds in neurology from across the region and beyond.
Dr. Osborne guided the featured session titled “Moving Mountains: Developing a Sustainable Caribbean Epilepsy Surgery Program.” The discussion focused on one of the Caribbean’s most pressing neurological care challenges: improving access to epilepsy surgery and strengthening long-term treatment pathways for patients.
Under his moderation, regional and international specialists examined strategies to expand epilepsy care, build technical capacity, and enhance specialized services within Caribbean health systems. The panel also explored a crucial question—“Can we close the gap?”—highlighting the need for deeper collaboration, innovative approaches, and sustainable infrastructure to support patients who require advanced neurological interventions.
SLBMC extended high praise to Dr. Osborne, describing his leadership as instrumental in advancing the region’s understanding of epilepsy care and shaping future medical pathways.
“His work plays a vital role in moving the Caribbean toward a future where more patients can access the specialized treatment they need closer to home,” the institution noted.
The conference, held during Epilepsy Awareness Month, reinforces the ongoing commitment of healthcare providers to improve outcomes, raise awareness, and empower families affected by epilepsy throughout the Caribbean.

SLBMC should be proud, this is the kind of leadership we need in Caribbean healthcare.
Caribbean people deserve world-class care too, not just first-world countries.
SLBMC making waves
Kudos to Dr. Osborne for representing Antigua and Barbuda on this stage.
