Maurice Merchant says the installation of smart meters will prevent tampering and ensure accurate readings
As the government continues to improve the water supply in Antigua and Barbuda, plans are being put in place to enhance operations.
Cabinet spokesperson Maurice Merchant explained that smart meters will be installed to help deter meter tampering and ensure accurate readings for residents.
One thousand will be installed in the first instance.
“These advanced devices will help curtail meter tampering, ensure accurate consumption readings, and support the authorities’ broader modernization and digitization initiatives,” Merchant said.
A faults management system will also be installed.
“This system is designed to monitor and detect leaks throughout the distribution network in real time. It will strengthen APUA’s ability to respond rapidly to disruptions, minimize water loss, and enhance service delivery to households and businesses,” Merchant added.
He noted that water supply has increased and will continue to rise in the coming weeks with the startup of the Seven Seas desalination plant.
“The Antigua Public Utilities Authority was at Cabinet on Wednesday and reported significant progress in its water production capacity and infrastructure modernization efforts. During the week, production reached 9.2 million gallons per day.
“This coming week, it is estimated to reach 10.6 million gallons per day—never before achieved in Antigua and Barbuda. So, we should see significant improvements in the water supply to households and businesses,” Merchant said.

Who going tamper with a water metre if you cant even get water in de pipe!! Really!! APUA give me a break!!
Another waste of taxpayers’ dollars. Why not install water storage facilities or tanks in the different communities? These can serve as backup water supplies whenever APUP locks off water for maintenance or repair work.
The will still find a way to cheat the system
