Chinese medical delegation including Professor Zhang Xingwei and Senator Clement Antonio makes courtesy visit to Ambassador Jiang Wei
A high-level delegation from the Center for Caribbean Studies at Hangzhou Normal University paid a courtesy call on the Chinese Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, Her Excellency Jiang Wei, on November 30, 2025, as both sides discussed ambitious new areas of medical cooperation.
The delegation was led by Professor Zhang Xingwei, Director of the Affiliated Hospital and Dean of the School of Clinical Medicine at Hangzhou Normal University, and a renowned cardiovascular specialist. Professor Zhang outlined the Center’s ongoing interdisciplinary work and highlighted the purpose of the Antigua and Barbuda visit — to advance concrete, long-term health initiatives.
According to Zhang, the team is focusing on several major medical projects, including:
• The establishment of a Chest Pain Center
• A cardiovascular interventional training program to build specialist capacity
• Development of an Internet hospital platform to expand digital healthcare access
He emphasized that these initiatives aim to strengthen local capabilities in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases through technology transfer, training, and capacity building.
Ambassador Jiang warmly welcomed the delegation, noting that healthcare cooperation remains a vital pillar of China–Antigua and China–Caribbean relations. She encouraged the Center for Caribbean Studies to continue acting as a bridge for deeper people-centered cooperation.
Ambassador Jiang stressed the importance of long-term planning and strong communication, urging that feasibility studies and preparation be conducted thoroughly to ensure that future projects deliver real, tangible benefits to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.
Senator Clement Antonio also attended the meeting, underscoring the government’s interest in strengthening medical partnerships that can improve national healthcare delivery.
