Sir Ronald Sanders, the ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to the United States
Antigua and Barbuda has expressed strong concern following a proclamation issued by U.S. President Donald J. Trump that will significantly restrict travel by its nationals to the United States beginning in 2026.
In a statement released by the Embassy of Antigua and Barbuda in Washington, citizens were advised that under the proclamation, titled “Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States” the entry of Antiguan and Barbudan nationals will be suspended under several major visa categories.
Effective January 1, 2026, nationals of Antigua and Barbuda will be barred from entering the United States as immigrants and as non-immigrants travelling on B-1 (business), B-2 (tourism), F (student), M (vocational), and J (exchange visitor) visas.
Ambassador to the United States Sir Ronald Sanders said the government is deeply troubled by the potential impact of the decision on citizens, particularly students, families, and business travellers who rely on regular access to the U.S.
“The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is deeply concerned about the impact of this proclamation on our citizens,” Sir Ronald said. “We are actively engaging with U.S. authorities to seek clarification and to ensure that the interests of our nationals are protected.”
Sir Ronald confirmed that he has already begun discussions with the U.S. State Department to clarify all aspects of the proclamation, including the status of individuals who were issued valid U.S. visas before December 31, 2025.
He noted that the U.S. decision appears to be based on concerns related to Antigua and Barbuda’s Citizenship by Investment Programme (CIP), specifically claims that the programme historically allowed citizenship without residency requirements.
“Our general objective is to engage fully with the U.S. Government to discuss the concern expressed about the basis for the visa restrictions,” the Ambassador explained. “Our efforts are directed at reaching understandings with the U.S. Government that would allow the restoration of visas to Antigua and Barbuda nationals.”
The Embassy said it will continue to update nationals as discussions with U.S. authorities progress. In the meantime, citizens are being urged to monitor official advisories and seek guidance before making travel plans to the United States.

We were warned about visa restrictions when we were launching the CIP … did our government listen or care? No…
Merry Christmas and happy new year from the USA! Unbelievable.
