Opposition Leader Blames U.S. Visa Ban on “Arrogance and Diplomatic Failures”

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle

Antigua and Barbuda continues to grapple with the fallout from this week’s unprecedented White House proclamation restricting travel to the United States by most of the country’s nationals, as Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle lays the blame squarely at the feet of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, accusing him of arrogance, dismissiveness, and repeated diplomatic miscalculations.

The U.S. proclamation—issued under President Donald Trump—clearly states that several categories of immigrant and non-immigrant visas held by Antiguan and Barbudan nationals will be suspended effective January 1, 2026.

Yet, according to the Opposition, the public has been left confused by what it describes as mixed and contradictory messaging from Prime Minister Browne and Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to Washington, Sir Ronald Sanders.

Ambassador Sanders, following talks in Washington, suggested that the situation is being exaggerated and that engagement with U.S. officials is ongoing. He has also insisted that Antiguans and Barbudans with valid US visas can travel within without fear of being denied entry.

But the Opposition Leader said in his press statement that these comments were simply smoke screens.

He reminded the public that the United Progressive Party (UPP) had repeatedly warned the Browne administration about vulnerabilities within the Citizenship by Investment Programme (CIP) and what it described as a dangerous erosion of border and passport security.

Among the concerns previously raised by the UPP, Pringle cited:
• Canada’s revocation of visa-free access and the European Union’s expressed security concerns;
• The discovery that Antiguan passports were being illegally manufactured in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, outside the oversight of the Citizenship by Investment Unit;
• The granting of citizenship to individuals allegedly involved in contraband trading on the Dark Web and to Chinese nationals wanted for alleged bank fraud;
• The creation of the now-defunct “Antigua Airways,” which facilitated the arrival of more than 900 West African nationals—initially described by the Prime Minister as “wealthy investors”—who later made their way into U.S. territories.

“Every single one of these breaches occurred under Prime Minister Browne’s watch,” Pringle said. “Every single warning from the Opposition was met with dismissiveness, denial, or deflection.”

According to the UPP, it had called for investigations and even a Commission of Inquiry, but was met instead with contempt by the administration.

Now, Pringle argues, ordinary Antiguans and Barbudans are paying the price—students studying abroad, businesspeople, patients seeking medical care, and families attempting to visit loved ones overseas.

The Opposition Leader also linked the visa ban controversy to broader governance concerns, including the abrupt termination of the Cuban Medical Brigade and its replacement with healthcare workers from Ghana, a move he said was carried out without explanation, preparation, or public reassurance.

Pringle further warned of economic consequences, noting that revenues from the Citizenship by Investment Programme were already factored into the government’s 2026 Budget.

“The people deserve honest answers about how this administration allowed our nation to become the target of U.S. visa restrictions,” he said. “They deserve to know what is actually required to fix this.”

“They deserve leaders who take international warnings seriously and engage proactively—rather than scrambling with damage control after disaster strikes.”

The UPP said it stands ready to work toward reversing the visa ban and restoring Antigua and Barbuda’s international standing, but insists that meaningful progress must begin with Prime Minister Browne accepting responsibility for his administration’s failures.

“Only genuine accountability can begin to repair the damage,” Pringle concluded.

    • Hi Cindy, your daughter is fine. The proclamation indicates that the restrictions apply to nationals who are outside the United States on the effective date and who do not have a valid visa on that date. Your daughter does not fall in this category. They have not terminated any existing visas. Your daughter is in the US and has a visa so she is fine.

  4. Shermain, where in the proclamation stated this: “The U.S. proclamation—issued under President Donald Trump—clearly states that several categories of immigrant and non-immigrant visas held by Antiguan and Barbudan nationals will be suspended effective January 1, 2026.” Your first article on the matter was clear to point out the persons with existing visas were exempted, and that was since clarified by the US, so why are you now playing into the fear mongering, contradicting the facts? I expect better from you. Be responsible and don’t peddle or allow yourself to be the conduit mis or disinformation.
