Police Warn Illegal Plate Swappers: ‘We Will Catch You’

Police Commissioner Everton Jeffers

Motorists who illegally change or swap license plates without authorization have been put on notice, as police prepare to introduce new real-time detection technology aimed at cracking down on fraudulent number plates.

During a recent interview with State Media, the Police Commissioner, Everton Jeffers, warned that once the license plate recognition system becomes operational next year, officers will be able to immediately identify vehicles carrying plates that do not match official Transport Board records.

“Those of you who keep changing number plates and you’re not Transport Board, we will catch you,” the Commissioner warned, describing the technology as a game changer for road policing.

According to police, the system will operate while officers are on routine patrol, scanning vehicles as they pass and alerting law enforcement to irregularities instantly. This capability is expected to close a major gap often exploited by criminals involved in vehicle theft and related crimes.

The Commissioner said the force will continue to adapt its tactics as new tools are introduced, stressing that flexibility will remain central to crime-fighting efforts.

“We’ll be freezing, unfreezing, and refreezing all the time. Our strategies will change,” he said.

Acknowledging public frustration over ongoing crime, he appealed for patience, assuring residents that police are actively strengthening their enforcement approach.

“Just bear with us. We know that sometimes it’s very difficult when you see what is happening,” he said.

Police say the rollout of the new technology forms part of a broader push to modernise law enforcement and restore public confidence through faster detection, stronger enforcement, and more visible policing.
