Authorities are continuing their investigation into the violent assault that led to the death of Karen Johannsen, a Paradise View resident who passed away on December 26 following a brutal incident at Dickenson Bay.

Police say they were called to the beach around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 19, 1after reports that Johannsen was attacked while leading a horseback riding tour along the shoreline. She was allegedly struck in the back of the head with a blunt object by a male assailant.

Emergency Medical Services responded, and Johannsen was rushed to Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where she was treated for severe head trauma. Due to the seriousness of her injuries, she was later airlifted to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in the United States for advanced medical care.

Despite efforts to save her life, Johannsen succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced dead at 10:17 p.m. (U.S. time) on December 26 by a medical professional.

Police have confirmed that a male suspect is currently in custody assisting with inquiries. While no charges have yet been announced, investigators say they are working diligently to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

The Royal Police Force has offered its condolences to Johannsen’s family and friends, describing the incident as a tragic and deeply distressing loss.

Authorities are urging anyone with information that could support the investigation to come forward by contacting the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-TIPS (8477).

As the inquiry continues, residents remain shocked by the violent nature of the attack on one of Antigua’s most popular beaches — and are calling for swift justice for Karen Johannsen.
