Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez

Minister of Tourism Charles “Max” Fernandez has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Karen Johansson, the American businesswoman who was violently attacked on Runaway Beach several days ago and later succumbed to her injuries.

In a formal statement issued on behalf of the Government and People of Antigua and Barbuda, Minister Fernandez extended heartfelt sympathies to Karen’s family and loved ones.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Antigua and Barbuda, I extend our deepest condolences on the untimely passing of your beloved sister, Karen. She was a wonderful person who brought joy and warmth to everyone she met, especially here in Antigua, where she loved so dearly.”

Fernandez described Karen as a passionate contributor to the tourism sector, particularly known for her work in horseback riding experiences along Antigua’s scenic coastline. He acknowledged her strong personal connection to the island — one she proudly shared with visitors from around the world.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time,” the statement continued. “May her memory be a source of comfort and her spirit live on in the hearts of all who knew her.”

Johansson’s passing has been met with grief within Antigua’s tourism community, where she was widely admired for her friendliness, dedication, and enthusiasm for showcasing the island’s natural beauty. Friends and colleagues say her absence will be deeply felt by both residents and the visitors she welcomed with pride.

Minister Fernandez reaffirmed that the government is closely monitoring the ongoing police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack, which he said must be treated with urgency and seriousness.

Karen’s legacy, he added, will endure — not only through the many lives she touched in Antigua, but also through her final act of generosity, as a registered organ donor whose gifts will help save others.
