A Change.org petition demanding that rapper Nicki Minaj be deported to her birthplace in Trinidad and Tobago has rapidly gained traction online, amassing tens of thousands of signatures amid a social media storm over her recent political commentary.
The petition, titled “Deport Nicki Minaj to Trinidad,” has drawn more than 50,000 signatures in the days following Minaj’s appearance at a conservative political event where she publicly praised U.S. political figures. The surge in support highlights the sharp divisions across social media over the pop star’s political affiliations.
Despite its popularity, legal experts note that such online petitions carry no legal authority to compel government action, including deportation. Immigration law in the United States requires formal proceedings and specific legal criteria that cannot be triggered by a public petition alone.
The Change.org page names several U.S. government agencies — including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the FBI, and the White House — calling on them to review Minaj’s residency status and consider stripping her of her right to remain in the United States, where she has lived since childhood.
Minaj was born in Trinidad and Tobago and later moved to the United States with her family. She holds U.S. permanent resident status but is not a citizen, a fact she confirmed last year during a livestream in which she joked that she believed she deserved honorary citizenship because of the taxes she has paid.
Many petition signers referenced dissatisfaction with Minaj’s public support for politically divisive figures and her recent critiques of other artists, marking a departure from her earlier reputation as an advocate for causes such as LGBTQ+ rights and racial justice.
