Four young cricketers from Antigua and Barbuda have left the island to represent the West Indies at the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, which will be held in Namibia and Zimbabwe from January 15 to February 6.
Matthew Miller, Jewel Andrew, Micah McKenzie and Tanez Francis departed Antigua on Monday as part of the Windies Under-19 squad, carrying with them the hopes of local supporters and the wider regional cricket community.
Their selection follows strong performances at the regional level and underscores Antigua and Barbuda’s continued contribution to West Indies cricket at the youth level. The tournament is regarded as a key development platform, often serving as a launching pad for future international stars.
The West Indies are scheduled to begin their World Cup campaign on January 15 with an opening match against Tanzania, as they look to make a positive start in the global competition featuring the world’s top emerging cricketing talent.
Local cricket officials and fans have expressed pride in the quartet’s achievement, noting that their inclusion reflects the depth of talent within Antigua and Barbuda’s youth cricket system.
As the tournament gets underway, expectations are high that Miller, Andrew, McKenzie and Francis will make meaningful contributions and do the nation proud on the international stage.
