Antigua and Barbuda Among Countries Affected by Canada’s Tighter Visitor Visa Rules in 2026

Antigua and Barbuda is among a growing list of countries facing tighter travel conditions under Canada’s updated visitor visa rules set to take effect in 2026, as immigration authorities introduce stricter eligibility standards and heightened scrutiny of travelers’ intentions and financial capacity.

The policy shift places Antigua and Barbuda alongside countries such as Costa Rica, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, all of which are adjusting to Canada’s evolving immigration landscape.

Canadian authorities say the changes are part of a broader effort to strengthen border security while reshaping how short-term visitors enter the country.

The revised framework tightens oversight of traditional visitor visas while expanding access to the electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) programme for select regions.

Under the updated rules, individuals seeking to enter Canada on a visitor visa for tourism, business, or family visits will encounter a more detailed and closely examined application process.

Applicants must demonstrate possession of a valid travel document, good health, and a clean criminal and immigration record.

Greater emphasis is also being placed on proving strong ties to the applicant’s home country—such as stable employment, family connections, or property ownership—to reassure immigration officers that the visitor will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.

Financial documentation has also come under increased scrutiny.

Applicants are now expected to clearly show they can support themselves throughout their visit, including accommodation and return travel costs. Officials have acknowledged that refusal rates have risen where applicants fail to satisfy these stricter requirements.

At the same time, Canada is widening the scope of its eTA programme, which allows eligible travelers to enter the country without applying for a traditional visitor visa for stays of up to six months.

  4. This will definitely catch people’s attention. Tighter visitor visa rules from Canada could impact travel plans, student mobility, and even business visits — so it’s important for those affected to understand exactly what’s changed and how to adjust. Hopefully the government provides clear guidance so residents and travellers aren’t left in the dark

  5. So you buy your plane ticket for Canada, apply for the eTA document. If you’re rejected, then what would you do with the plane ticket?? Does the airline refund your money? One of the requirements before applying for the eTA document, you need to show your travel documents.
