Rufus Adolph Lewis

The main road running through the community of Swetes will be renamed the Rufus Lewis Highway, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced during the funeral service of veteran trade unionist and nation builder Rufus Adolph Lewis.

The decision follows a request from Lewis’ son, Enoch Lewis, who appealed for the renaming in recognition of his father’s lifelong dedication to country and community. However, the Prime Minister noted that he had already intended to make the announcement, regardless of the request.

Lewis was a longtime and proud member of the 39ers, and was instrumental in the development of key infrastructure projects across the island. Among them were the Old Road Primary School and the All Saints Police Station, facilities that continue to play vital roles in education and public safety.

He also made a lasting impact through the labour movement, serving on the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) executive committee for 22 years. During his tenure, Lewis was regarded as a steadfast advocate for workers’ rights and organisational growth. He retired from active service in 2021.
