Alex Martinez votes in uncontested election for leadership in A&B Hispanic community

An internal election held by members of the Dominican (Spanish-speaking) community on Sunday resulted in Alex Martinez being appointed leader unopposed, further deepening divisions within the group.

Martinez, who has described himself as the leader of the Dominican community, announced in November last year that an election would be held on January 11, following questions raised about his leadership.

At the time, he called on anyone interested in contesting the position to formally sign up and participate in the process.

However, when the election date arrived, no candidates came forward, resulting in Martinez being appointed unopposed with the backing of his supporters.

Despite the outcome, controversy continues to surround the process. Critics within the community argue that the election lacked transparency and legitimacy, claiming it should have been organised by an independent body rather than Martinez’s own team.

They also contend that insufficient notice was given, despite the announcement having been made several months in advance.

Opponents have further indicated that they are planning a separate election, raising concerns about parallel leadership claims and ongoing fragmentation within the Dominican community.

The situation has left many community members expressing frustration, as calls grow for dialogue, independent oversight, and a more inclusive process to resolve the leadership dispute.
