The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has reiterated that no decision has been taken to end cooperation with the Cuban Medical Brigade, amid ongoing public discussion surrounding the future of the long-standing healthcare partnership.
Cabinet clarified its position following discussions at its most recent meeting, stressing that collaboration with Cuba in the health sector remains in place as part of transitional arrangements to strengthen local capacity.
The Cuban Medical Brigade has played a significant role in Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare system for decades, providing doctors, nurses, and specialists to supplement local services, particularly during periods of staff shortages.
Cuban medical professionals were also instrumental during the COVID-19 pandemic, assisting with clinical care and public health response efforts.
Government officials noted that while Antigua and Barbuda continues to expand local training programmes, including nurse education at the UWI Five Islands Campus, international partnerships remain an important component of the healthcare system.
Cabinet emphasized that any future adjustments to healthcare staffing arrangements will be made carefully and in the best interest of public health, with continuity of care remaining the top priority.
