Prime Minister Gaston Browne says there has been a policy reset within the United States aimed at reducing the influx of low-income migrants, a shift he believes is driving stricter immigration measures.
Speaking on the Morning Pointe Show, Browne said recent U.S. policies have made it more difficult for Caribbean nationals and other foreign residents to enter the country and to remain there beyond approved periods.
He explained that the changes reflect a broader effort by U.S. authorities to tighten controls and discourage long-term overstays, particularly by those seeking economic opportunities.
In light of the developments, the Prime Minister urged residents of Antigua and Barbuda to focus on opportunities at home, emphasizing the importance of building success locally rather than relying on migration.
Browne said the government remains committed to expanding economic opportunities domestically and encouraged citizens to invest in local industries and entrepreneurship.

The U.S. talks about partnership with the Caribbean, but these policies feel one-sided and dismissive.
100% in agreement with you. We are too bent on looking to the US
While I fully agree with the PM sometimes the path that we week takes us out of Antigua. It is impossible for every one in Antigua to find employment here
People need to stop blaming Antigua’s government for U.S. policy decisions. Washington will always act in its own interest
It’s frustrating watching bright Antiguans go abroad while we have potential sitting on the sidelines. Time to invest in us!
